Education and current position
She holds a Ph.D degree in Information and Media Studies and is Associate Professor in Media Studies at Institute of Aesthetics and Communication, Arts, Aarhus University.
Kirsten Frandsen has been a researcher and teacher at the Danish School of Journalism,
and she has since 1996 been teaching bachelor and graduate courses in Media
Studies at Aarhus University.
Management and research experience
She has participated in a number of Danish research projects, among others Media in a Globalized Society (1999-2001) funded by the national research council for the humanities. In 2006-2009 she was director of the research project Television Entertainment: Cross-mediality and Knowledge, funded by the Danish Research Agency. In 2005-2009 she was member of board at Center for University Studies in Journalism, at University of Aarhus, and she has been an expert consultant for the Norwegian Research Council. Moreover, she has held a number of administrative posts: Director of studies (2001-2004), vice-chair at Institute of Information and Media Studies, Aarhus University (2006-2011). Currently she is director of the Ph.D study programme ICT, Media, Communication & Journalism at the Graduate School of Arts, Aarhus University (2010-).
Kirsten Frandsen's research has mainly been focused on sports in the media, but recently she has also dealt with other topics. Her PhD was an historical analysis of the development of the role of sportsjournalists in Denmark including both print and broadcast journalism. In recent years she has in particular been interested in the relations between sport and television on the one hand and the audience's relation with television sports programmes on the other. Comprehensive empirical studies have been done in both areas, including also a historical study of the development of sports programmes on Danish television. Besides a general interest in television she has also made contributions on lifestyle programmes and been interested in theoretical issues and methodological challenges relating to entertainment studies and to reception and production studies.
